'OPERATION REFLECT'
INTRODUCTION
In 2013, the Chief of the General Staff directed the British Army to ‘mark the centenary of the First World War in a dignified, reflective and respectful manner to commemorate the sacrifice of our forebears, learn enduring lessons and educate ourselves and others’.
OPERATION REFLECT is the name given to the Army’s approach to FIRST WORLD WAR centenary commemorations and learning.
Drawing on experience from Army Staff Ride 14 and 16, the Army will conduct the final Staff Ride of OPERATION REFLECT to France in October 2018, examining significant major operations during the final year of the FIRST WORLD WAR, through to the Armistice of 11th November 2018.
ARMY STAFF RIDE 18 will be preceded by a Study Day on 20 Oct for all participants. This will mark the formal start of the Army’s 2018 centenary commemorations of the FIRST WORLD WAR and highlight its enduring relevance to contemporary military planning and geopolitical circumstances.
AIM
The principle aim of the stand is to set the tone for all participants ahead of deployment on the Army Staff Ride in France. Noting the centrality of logistics in the final stages of the war the stand must contribute to the overarching discussion of how mobility was restored to operations in 1918.
The secondary aim will be to explore both the themes of scale & rapid technological change and medical advancements.

ASR 18 - CSS STUDY DAY - THANK YOU
Although the General Officer Commanding 1 Division and the Brigade Commander of 102 Logistic Brigade have both passed on their sentiments of gratitude to you all, I wanted to take the opportunity to personally convey my own heartfelt thanks.
As you were aware, the Study Day on the 20 October marked the start of the Army Staff Ride 2018, part of Operation REFLECT. It was planned to meet the Head of the Army's intent to
‘mark the centenary of the First World War in a dignified, reflective and respectful manner to commemorate the sacrifice of our forebears, learn enduring lessons and educate ourselves and others.’
A challenge but a very worthy endeavour.
On Saturday the weather was particularly kind and lit up the wide ranging display which you all contributed to supplying. It was clear to all attendees that a significant amount of personal effort had been invested.
I know that many of you travelled considerable distances and gave up time, not only on the day but also in the preparation for the event, (including the many phone calls and emails from me!)
Included are some photographs with more that can be viewed on Twitter under ASR18 'Twitter'.
It is clear from the comments on this feed that the participants of the Study really enjoyed the day and appreciated your hard work. It was indeed a particularly memorable day.
May I say what a privilege it has been working on this project with you and again thank you for your contribution.

Best regards,
Major H.P.M. McCullough RLC
