"As he qualified just before the outbreak of the second world war his career was interrupted by service as a medical officer in the Royal Navy, including the particularly dangerous posting to a convoy rescue ship."

"On "demob" he returned to Liverpool to his chosen career in orthopaedic surgery. He obtained his first consultant appointment in 1950 at Warrington and St Helens Hospitals."

"Some two years later he was appointed consultant orthopaedic surgeon in the Liverpool Teaching Hospital, taking a post at the Royal Southern Hospital, alongside Professor Robert Roaf where he continued to practice until the hospital moved to the Royal Liverpool Hospital in 1979, when he retired from active surgical practice."

"He was a dedicated teacher, being closely involved in both

undergraduate and postgraduate teaching,

the latter for the MChOrth degree course of Liverpool University. "

"He published papers on various orthopaedic conditions,

but he will be chiefly remembered for his studies on the

influence of the psoas muscle on congenital

dislocation of the hip and osteoarthritis of the hip."

"His work led to the operation of psoas release."

"On retirement from active surgical practice

he continued to work his large medico legal practice

with enthusiasm until his stroke in 1998."

"He even seemed to enjoy giving evidence in court

as an expert witness. "

"Austin O’Malley was a highly respected member of the

medical profession and a very pleasant and valued colleague."
