'FLASH BACK'

In 1998 at a Conference in Lancashire, a presentation on Cross Contamination in Theatres was being given. At the end of the presentation the Speaker invited questions from the Floor.

A gentleman in the audience stood up and asked if the first slide from the presentation could be put up on the screen. The speaker duly obliged and the image appeared.

'That is a Charnley Howorth Operating Theatre isn't it?' The Delegate asked.

'Yes' replied the Speaker.

'And that IS a Charnley Hip Replacement being performed?' Asked the Delegate.

'Yes' replied the Speaker

'Where are the Suits?

'We found they were not cost effective and so we scrapped them! replied the Speaker

'SO, the TWO YEARS Charnley and I spent designing the suits was a waste of time was it? replied Dr Hugh Howorth!

By the time the Speaker had gathered his composure to respond to Dr Howorth - Dr Howorth had walked out of the Conference!

In 2002 at the Afonwen Exhibition set up by TMMR a visitor walked into the room and asked to speak to the person in charge of the display. The visitor was a very distinguished gentleman with a firm handshake

Dr Howorth sat down and started talking about the work he had done throughout his career. Shortly after lunch he apologised and said he must take his leave of us as he had to be back home by 3 o'clock for the Monaco Time Trials on Television.

Just before he left he asked if we would be interested in learning MORE about what he had done. When we replied that we would be very interested he invited us to go and see him at his home in Lancashire which had also been the home of Ollerton Research Laboratories.

It was agreed that we would contact him in a few weeks to arrange to go and see him.
